Another New Year!

Here we are, settling into 2018. How are those New Year’s Resolutions going? The top five according to the Nielsen survey are:

  1. Stay fit and healthy
  2. Lose Weight
  3. Enjoy life to the fullest
  4. Spend less, save more
  5. Spend more time with family and friends

In the top 10: Do NOT make any more New Year’s resolutions.

According to commonly cited statistics, only 8 percent actually keep their New Year’s resolutions which would explain why many people stop making them. We seem doomed to fail because we make too many, most are unrealistic, small failures cause us to quit and so on.

My personal take on why resolutions fail is because we really don’t take the time to understand why we choose the resolutions in the first place. Most obvious to me is because these are challenges and issues that we can’t seem to adapt to an everyday lifestyle. So once a year we make a promise to conquer our personal challenges and demons, thinking magically a new day, month and year will be the answer.

In order to truly make changes that are sustainable, it is crucial to look at ourselves and fully understand why we do the things we do. Food can comfort, alcohol can numb, and exercising is work and commitment. I guess the question becomes, “What do we like and what do we want?” When looking at a donut you might say, “I’d like to eat this donut, but I want to lose weight.” If that donut gets consumed you actually wanted the donut however would have liked to lose weight. Think about this.

The choices we make are truly the ones we want. So how do we get what we want, not simply what we’d like? My opinion has always been balance.

Habits can be changed. Attitudes can be altered. Most DO NOT come easily. Being mindful of why we make our choices is key. Hold up that mirror, stop the action, remind yourself of your goals, and be realistic. Most people did not gain weight overnight, therefore it won’t be lost overnight. Most people did not get into financial debt overnight therefore it can’t be fixed overnight.

Whether finishing a project around the house or altering your own behavior, take baby steps. My sister-in-law wanted to take her family on vacation when they were young and broke. Each time her family wanted to go out to eat, she prepared the meal at home. Purchases were made at discount stores often using coupons. The money she saved was then put into a large can. Within a year, she had saved enough money to take her family of four on a vacation to Hawaii. Her married daughter recently told her that this practice of saving money is alive and well in her own home today.

Many of us have imagination and are creative. Find ways to get achieve your goals. If you slip don’t say, “Oh well, I’ll start again next year.” There is nothing magical about a new year. It is simply a day or moment.

In my book, “12 Ways To Discover What Makes You Tick” I lovingly guide my readers to get to know themselves in ways they might have not previously done. I believe until we really know why we do what we do, it is virtually impossible to affect change.

You have one life. You have one body. Work on being the best version of yourself. I believe you will enjoy the benefits of starting and finishing goals that have previously eluded you.

This morning I gave an Uber ride to a young woman from Egypt. She had moved here three months ago to raise her family in a country where all are free to worship.

In Egypt, her 5-year-old daughter was told by other children that they were not allowed to play with her simply because she was Christian. Although this woman struggles with the language and our customers, these freedoms that we take for granted are precious to her and her family.

No matter your political leanings or opinions about America, always remember that we have freedoms and are protected by laws that our soldiers continue to fight for so we too can live freely in this great country.

Don’t judge those who are different. Like you, they just want to live in peace and be able to worship and practice their faiths and traditions without persecution.

Thank you all for supporting my website, buying my book and giving me the feedback on the work that I do!

To all of my Jewish friends, Happy Hanukkah. To all of my Christian friends, Merry Christmas! Be safe, be kind to one another and be good to yourself.

I have always felt that the deeper the love, the harder the loss. These words bring me little comfort at this moment, as I recently said good-bye to my beautiful beagle, Roxie. She was barely 8 weeks old, 15 years ago when I fell head-over-heels in love with her.

For anyone who has lost a family pet; sibling; parent; friend; child or spouse, no amount of words can make up for the hole that is left in our hearts. The comforting words and support I have received is overwhelming and, to a degree, helpful. I am also well aware that no one gets away in this life without experiencing loss.

Memories, pictures and funny stories are all that’s left. These also bring some comfort. However; it is the physical presence that cannot be replaced, substituted or conjured up. My grandmother, who I adored, passed away over 33 years ago, and I still miss her warm smile, loving arms and stuffed cabbage to this day.

Life can change on a dime. Life cannot be taken for granted. No one gets a crystal ball letting him or her know when the last good-bye, kiss, or hug is truly the last. Knowing this we can let the people in our lives know how much they truly mean to us. We can hold our loved ones closer, and use our words and actions to love and NOT to hurt.

Living life waiting to lose someone is NOT the answer. However be aware that life is a precious gift that should be treasured and nurtured. My suggestion is to err on the side of taking too many pictures and using many expressions of love and caring.

At the end of your journey, I promise it won’t be the money you have earned, the toys you have amassed or even the trips you have taken that will bring you the most joy. It will be the people you dined with, laughed with and cried with that will be a measure of your life. I include in this group, our furry friends who we are fortunate enough to care for, love and be loved by for such a short period of time.   Enrich their lives the way they enrich yours. Give them the type of love they give you…UNCONDITIONAL!
